NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

The National Honor Society (NHS) was founded in 1921 to recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to good citizenship, including character, service and leadership.

Members inducted into the Bishop Maurice J. Dingman Chapter at Dowling Catholic are required to hold a 3.7 cumulative grade point average on a 4.00 scale when elected. They are then required to maintain that standard throughout the remainder of their high school career.

Through NHS service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities of character, service, and leadership, which earned them this honor. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment.

ACADEMIC AWARDS

To receive an Academic Letter, students must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.3300 or above at the end of the first semester of their senior year. Students with a GPA of 3.6700 or above at that time will also receive an Academic Excellence Medal, and those with a GPA of 3.8000 or above will also receive an Aquinas Key.THOMAS AQUINAS

Thomas Aquinas was born into a noble family in 1225. In his teens, Thomas went against the wishes of his family and joined the Dominican Order where he accepted a vow of poverty. Later he became a priest and teacher. During his lifetime, Thomas distinguished himself by a life of holiness, acquiring the name Angelic Doctor. He found great favor with Popes Urban IV and Clement IV thanks to his intellect and scholarly writings.

After his death in 1274, the Catholic Church bestowed upon him the distinction of sainthood as well as the titles of Doctor of the Universal Church and Patron of Catholic Schools. His is the only name to be mentioned in the Code of Canon Law, which encourages priests to follow the “scholarly pursuits of the Angelic Doctor.”
